Jamaica has started exporting cannabis to Canada, a Jamaican minister said at a Toronto press summit last week.
The Jamaica Observer reports that Audley Shaw, the country’s Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, revealed the news under the theme, ‘Reducing barriers and finding ways to bridge the legal cannabis trade between Canada and the Caribbean,’ at a CanEx Investment Summit in Toronto.

Global Canna Labs, one of the country’s largest cannabis companies, made the export of cannabis, representing Jamaica’s first major shipment, according to Jamaica’s Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA). Despite the first, though, the shipment was only about 22 pounds, or about the same weight as the average two-year-old.
Orville Powell, managing director of Global Canna Labs, said the move “was a very rigorous and challenging process” that led to a “tremendous feeling of satisfaction.”
“From the CLA to the Ministry of Agriculture to customs and the folks at the airport, it was handled with great professionalism — and for that, we are extremely grateful,” Powell said.
This move is the first step for Jamaica, which plans to make a dent in the industry by exporting to Australia and other countries.
